Tension type headaches

Tension-type headache is the most common type of primary headache. Most people experience it at some point. Stress is a common trigger, and the pain often comes on without warning. It is often described as a tight band around the head or a weight pressing on to the head, and it may also cause discomfort in the neck or shoulder muscles. A headache can last anywhere from minutes to several days.

Tension Type Headache is usually episodic, meaning that it is experienced every now and then  – and most people will experience it at some point in their lives.

Sometimes though, it can progress into Chronic Tension Type Headache, which can be more disabling and harder to treat. For this reason it is important to monitor your headache patterns and seek medical attention early if you are experiencing regular headaches, new headaches or have any concerns.

Common treatments

Common treatment for tension type headache includes over-the-counter medications, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin. Frequent or improper use of these medications can put you at risk of more frequent headache or chronic headache conditions. It is important for your safety to speak with your pharmacist or your GP if you are concerned or need support with your treatment for headaches.

Taking  steps, such as professional counselling, to address any stress you may have is also important to consider if you experience tension type headache.
